Teleopthalmic camp at Poongulam & Karuvili villages: High-tech eyecare at the doorstep!

One well-known fact about Vatsalyam is that it has always believed in synergy and displayed a willingness to work with any individual or institution committed to serving people. It was again demonstrated at the teleopthalmic camp on October 17 & 18 at Veedhividangan (2km from Poongulam) and Karuvili villages organized with the help of Sankara Nethralaya, Asiaís premier eye care institution known for its remarkable community service.

Through this project supported by ISRO, Sankara Nethralaya had dispatched 5 ophthalmologists in a truck fitted with state-of-the-art diagnostic facilities.

Each patient was taken through a well-structured screening method to detect eye disorders. Images of the patientís eye were transmitted through the special satellite designed by ISRO were flashed on to a screen before the Chief eye specialist sitting 300km away in Chennai at the Sankara Nethralaya headquarters so as to help him diagnose the case and counsel patients directly!

Over 150 patients attended the event at each village. The team of ophthalmologists led by Shri Shanmugham moved from house to house to physically examine the patients and urged them to take advantage of this hi-tech facility available at their doorstep.
Another section that participated in and benefited from these events is some 100 students from primary schools in the villages nearby.

Vatsalyam places on record its heart-felt thanks to
Shri. Sivaraman, President, Poongulam Village Development Federation

Shri Thyagarajan, Former President, Veedhividangan Panchayat

for all the coordination & hospitality extended to the volunteers of Vatsalyam and ophthalmologists from Sankara Nethralaya.
